PD re Internet scams

Good Morning Jackson!

A recent spike in internet scams has hit the region, and more concerning, our community.  The general nature of the threat involves a claim of an explosive device being placed in a business or residence.  The scammer will then attempt to extort money, by way of “BitCoin” from the victim.  I can assure you that the threat of actual violence, and any danger associated with this particular scam is small.  We did have a confirmed attempt in Jackson at a local Inn.  The proprietor’s properly ignored it, preserved the e-mail, and reported it promptly.  This has happened with some frequency all across New Hampshire.

Since then, a State wide bulletin has been issued alerting all law enforcement agencies of the scope and nature of this activity.  Also, although usually just a nuisance,  these events do violate State and Federal laws.  They should be reported so that law enforcement agencies can track and share information on these threats.  As with any internet crimes, vigilance, and common sense, are your best defense!

Please don’t hesitate to call he Jackson Police Department if you receive this, or any other type of scam via internet, U.S. mail or over the phone.

Regards,
Chief Chris Perley
