July 19, 2023 - Dundee Community Forest Protected

Overview

The Dundee Community Forest offers pristine streams, mature timber, old-growth forest, rare plants, and mountain views. Working with the Trust for Public Land, and with the support of many generous funders and donors, these 1,250 acres in Bartlett and Jackson are now owned by Upper Saco Valley Land Trust, with a conservation easement held by the NH Division of Forests and Lands.

The Ham House is excluded from the conservation easement and protected with a Declaration of Trust.

TRAILS & DIRECTIONS

The development of sustainable trails, parking areas, and other amenities takes time, and we appreciate your patience as Upper Saco Valley Land Trust staff, volunteers, and contractors embark on the initial phases of what will be a multi-year planning and implementation effort. View a property map.

  • There are no existing trails or established parking areas at this time.
  • Cell service is unreliable in the area.
  • Be prepared with the 10 essentials, and know how to use a map and compass.
  • Be aware of and respect nearby and abutting private property, which may not yet be marked.

CONSERVATION AND PUBLIC RECREATION VALUES

  • Offers future recreation opportunities
  • Abuts the White Mountain National Forest and Tin Mountain Conservation Center’s Jackson Field Station to create wildlife corridors, recreational networks, and unfragmented forests.
  • Features diverse habitats including a variety of forest types and ages; ravines and ledges; and vernal pools, wetlands, and streams, including the source of the Wildcat Brook, a federally designated Wild and Scenic River

PROJECT HISTORY

Seventeen parcels of land were assembled over a period of 60 years by the late William “Mack” Beal of Jackson. Trained as a forester and a surveyor, Mr. Beal was a careful steward who kept the lands open to community use for hiking, hunting, and cross-country skiing. The acquisition of this land was made possible by dedication from the Beal Family, Trust for Public Land, Grantors, and many USVLT staff and volunteers who shepherded this project - for more than five years - to completion.

NEXT STEPS

An advisory committee with representatives from Bartlett and Jackson conservation commissions, non-profit partners (e.g., Tin Mountain Conservation Center and Jackson Ski Touring Foundation), and multiple user groups (e.g., hunters, birders, hikers, skiers, and neighbors) will be formed to provide input for management at the Dundee Community Forest. The advisory group will consider excellent feedback provided by 60 people who attended a community gathering held on September 29, 2021. Read the summary report.
